The 2P-2D Rule as shown
in the pictures below, comes in
handy for dealing with any
psychological problem,
be it anxiety, sadness, jealousy
or any other negative emotion.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
See complete list here:
Negative Emotions
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Let us take the example of a
very common emotion: Sadness!
We have all felt at some
time in our lives, sad, low,
blue“, “down-in-the-dumps“,
distressed, uncomfortable
and unable to handle it.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
First, Apply
“The 2P Rule”

[Normal to Problem]
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
The 2P Rule [see picture above]
is the 1st to be applied to find out
if any issue has become a Problem.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
The 1st P stands for
Persistence [over time].
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
The 2nd P stands for
Pervasiveness [across situations]

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Persistence over time
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

This refers to the duration
for which the issue persists.

As already explained in
All about Mind,
normal emotions or reactions are
short-lasting & fleeting like
the weather, they subside with time.

For instance, if I lose my purse,
and with it, my cellphone, in the
morning, I might be feeling
sad, upset or irritable for a few
hours, maybe even days,
but gradually I’ll get out of it.

More commonly, it is seen that
death of a loved one leaves us
sad, tearful and low for a
much longer time; and yet,
with time, we find that we are
able to cope and steadily
regain control of our lives.

If the an sadness persists for a
long time [for over 2 weeks]
or seems to be worsening,
we may be now dealing with an
illness, and it should ring alarm
bells, and we must initiate
Self-Help Techniques
and monitor the problem.

Because more than anywhere else,
in case of psychological problems,
A stitch in time definitely saves nine.

Early recognition is the key to
Prevention, easier management
and better chances of recovery,
since the chemical changes in the
brain keeps spiraling if unchecked.

So persistent problems should be
followed up with the 2nd P.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Pervasiveness
Across Situations
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

All of us spend our time in
three areas or locations
or situations for which I use
the mnemonic “ShOW

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
S stands for Society
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ho stands for Home
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
W stands for Work
(Or an Academic Institution
[school or college]
if we are students).
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
If something has become a problem,
it would trouble us in all three
areas of life – so i would be feeling
sad everywhere – whether
I am in my mother’s home,
or at work, or at a party
or in my own home.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
If something has become a problem,
it would trouble us in all three
areas of life – so my anxiety or
sadness or jealousy
would trouble
me everywhere – whether I am
in my mother’s home, or at work,
or at a party or in my own home.

If my feelings of sadness and misery
occur only in one particular situation,
the problem is likely to be in that
specific situation, and not within me.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
In the end, even if it is not pervasive
or persistent, anything out of the
ordinary or our “own” normal should
not be ignored – it must be followed
up carefully to ensure that
things are not worsening.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This is where our friends, philosophers,
guides, gurus and relatives play a
particularly important role in helping us
get over minor issues – which are
usually, normal reactions to
abnormal life situations.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Next, Apply
“The 2D Rule”

[Problem to Disorder]
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
If the 2P Rule indicates a problem,
we immediately apply the 2D Rule
as shown in the picture above,
which helps identify the
more serious problems.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
1st D stands for Distress
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
2nd D stands for Dysfunction

🥰🥰🥰🥰
Distress
🥰🥰🥰🥰

Any abnormal experience is distressing.
We become discontented with life,
uncomfortable, miserable or unhappy.

It would lead to an inability to reach
goals and adapt to the demands of life.
E.g., a homemaker wife may
hardly be able to send off her
children to school and husband to
work and manage her household
chores, but even if she does,
it would be at great cost to herself.
So, she would be in marked
personal Distress.

Distressing problems should be
followed up with the 2nd D.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Dysfunction
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Abnormal experiences lead to a
disruption in our social and
occupational or educational
functioning i.e. our functioning
is below par, as compared
to what we are capable of.

Social functioning means we are
unable to discharge our social
responsibilities, e.g., attend a
parent-teacher meeting in our
kid’s school, and are not able
to attend even pleasurable
activities like a get-together or a party.

Occupational functioning means
we are unable to discharge
our responsibilities at work.

Educational functioning is for those
who are still studying and means
we are unable to discharge our
responsibilities at our school
or college – completing
assignments, taking exams, etc.

If we have ticked yes to the 2Ps
and then the 2Ds, it’s time for a
consultation with an expert.

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Therefore, to sum up, anything
that appears to have become a
Problem after applying the
2P-Rule, should ring alarm bells,
warn us that something is wrong
and set us off towards Self-Help
Techniques and close
Monitoring of the problem.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
But if the 2D-Rule reveals that
there is a possibility of a Disorder,
it is a signal that something is
grossly wrong, and one should
immediately see a physician,
preferably a mental health
professional like a psychiatrist
for further evaluation
and management.
