Are You Overeating Because of “Unit Bias”

Our mind often forms
Mental short-cuts
which lead to automatic
responses to particular life
situations. When these are
Negative and Self-defeating,
they are known as NATS or
“Negative Automatic Thoughts”

  1. Definition:
    • When we believe that a single unit of any item is the “normal” amount to consume.
    • This mental trick can lead us to consume more or less food than we should, depending on the size of the item.
  2. Examples:
    • We are more likely to consume an entire bag of chips, even if it contains multiple servings, simply because it is presented as a single unit.
    • We may be less likely to consume a single piece of fruit, even if it is a recommended serving size, because it feels like a small amount.
  3. Result:
    • Unit Bias can lead to unhealthy eating habits, as well as other negative behaviors such as overspending or excessive drinking.
  4. Management:
    • Be aware of recommended serving sizes and pay attention to the actual amount of a substance being consumed.
    • Portion control and mindful eating practices can also help us avoid overconsumption and make healthier choices.
    • Additionally, we can reframe our perception of what constitutes a “normal” amount of a given item by seeking out information and education about serving sizes and healthy habits.
