Songs From Films – Based On or Inspired by Raag Kalavati

  1. Aayee pari rang bhari” (DO PHOOL, arguably Vasant Desai’s most memorable soundtrack)… asha is other-worldly…
  2. Aaja re mere pyar ke rahi, Lata
  3. Aashiq Ho To Aisa – Song – Noorie
  4. Agar Dilbar Ki Ruswai Sanam Tu Bewafa – Mumtaz & Shatrughan Sinha – Khilona
  5. Bhajan Bina Chain Na Aaye Raam – (Rafoo Chakkar)
  6. Dekho Ri Koi Kaminiya- Asha (Ganga Ki Lehren)
  7. Hai agar dushman dushman, zamaana ghum nahin – Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin
  8. Kabhi To Miloge Jeevan Sathi Lata Mangeshkar Film Sati Savitri (1964) Laxmikant & Pyarelal.. Slight use of R in avroah in Antara. From sthai, kalavati. Pyarelal’s interview- ” The song in raag Kalavati “Kabhi to miloge jeevan saathi” came about because ever since Laxmi and I had heard Ravi Shankar’s wonderful “Haaye re woh din kyun na aaye” in “Anuradha” we had also wanted to do a Kalavati for Lata.”
  9. Kahe Tarsaye Jiyara Yauvan Rut Sajan Chitralekha (1964) – (Asha Bhonsle Usha Mangeshkar).
  10. Koi sagar dil ko behlata nahin 1966 film Dil Diya Dard Liya, Waheeda Rehman, Dilip Kumar – from a discussion in our music group!!
    • S G P D n D S’….. S n D P G P D n D P, G P G S ‘n…
    • ? mixture of Kalawati and Janasammohini.
    • Fair user of R in the second antara ( kal to sab the ) Re in both aroah and avroah – so makes it a classic example of Janasammohini…  R has not been used to add colour or embellishment. It’s integral.
    • Bekhudi main bhi qaraar aata nahin cannot be executed without R.
    • Similarly kal to sabh they caravan ke saath is impossible to render without R.
    • The song tilts more towards Janasammohini.
    • Part of the reward of such discussions lies in memories of things past. Kalaavati is strongly rooted in Marathi melodic thinking, not quite to the extent Yaman is, but up there.
    • A couple of favourites, from memory:
      • de malaa ge chandrike (Lata singing a Hridayanath composition): The song would have been better served if Hridayanath had done a little “less” – just an opinion. Lata’s handling of those difficult ups and downs is unmatched.
      • jaya gange bhaageerathi (Prasad Savkar): A raaga maalaa essentially, but maintains a strong Kalaavati core.
      • Back in the Hindi domain. Shankar-Shambhu qawaali from the mid-’60s – “haqeeqat ye hai humko yoo.N teri mehfil mei.n aanaa thaa”?
      • Closing with Chitragupt yet again. He had his way with the casual classical phrase. That should net a few more, e.g. “naGmaa-e-dil ko chheD kar” (EK RAAZ) Koyi sagar dilko bahalata nahin – Dil Diya Dard Liya – Q: isnt this Raag Janasamohini? the other immortal one of same raaga – Haye Re Wo Din Kyun Naa aaye, both are so similar…? A: Both Raga Kalawati n Raga Jansamohini are very similar n only difference is RISHABH “R”. When composing the song Hai re woh din kyun…. Pt. Ravi Shankar Ji’ had Jansamhini in his mind… !!
      • In film songs most singers & music directors go out of Raagas without disturbing the songs… In pure Classical music it is not allowed yet many budding musicians do it without disturbing the Raaga’s nature..
  11. Meghwa gagan bich jhaanke…’ in ‘Harischandra Taramati'(1963) Lata Mangeshkar-‘ In an interview Pyarelal stated -“There is also a Kalavati in our “Harishchandra Taramati” – “Meghwa gagan”. Did you know the last note of the line “Pawan gungunaake” ends on a madhyam, which is not in the raag? But Lata liked it and so we let it be.”
  12. Na To Karvan Ki Talaash Hai-Barsaat Ki Raat “This starts in a surprisingly pure rendition of Kalavati, but very quickly some mixing starts… a very prominent, very beautiful, yet very un-kalavati-ish presence of the Shuddha Nishad. There is also a slight presence of a Shuddha Madhyam; but its presence is fleeting and not really sufficient to destroy the Kalavati mood. At the risk of over simplifying, we could say that the song itself is a cracking good Kalavati/Khammaj mix with strong Kalavati interludes.”
